About Anderson Japanese Gardens

In 2023, Anderson Japanese Gardens celebrates its 25th year as a non-profit public garden. Anderson Gardens has been recognized as one of the highest quality Japanese gardens in North America by Sukiya Living Magazine. With the ongoing guidance of designer Hoichi Kurisu, a swampy backyard in Rockford, Illinois, has transformed over decades into a 12-acre landscape which leads guests through elements of stone, landscape, and water. Master craftsmanship and 16th century architecture are found throughout the Garden. Anderson Japanese Gardens works to deliver the mission to β€œopen minds to a different culture while offering guests a place of peace and tranquility where they will find healing, renewal, inspiration, and a reenergized soul.”

One of my favorite places to walk around and explore. So peaceful! The Koi fish, ducks, turtles, and chipmunks are so entertaining. If you haven't been I highly recommend it. Make sure you try the spring water.

We were visiting my niece and her family in Rockford and decided to visit the Anderson Japanese Gardens. We are so glad we did, beautiful and fun feeding the huge Koi, and turtles - highly recommend getting everyone their own bag of food when you are getting in ($1 a bag and everyone had fun). They were setting up for an evening music event (i think weekly in summer?) and we wished we could have stayed or come back for.

A bit small for the price, but I still felt I got my money's worth because it is a very lovely set of gardens. Pretty flowers and serene waterfalls, all set along & around a series of very nice streams and ponds make this entire garden a wonderfully enjoyable and beautiful way to spend about 1 hour. That said, even at a very casual pace, squeezing a full hour out of this place was pushing it, so given the cost of entry, I'd rate it at 4 stars rather than the full 5 I would give it if it were free. Worth visiting imo, but definitely not a must visit, especially if you prefer to seek out free alternatives in less curated settings.

These Japanese gardens are worth the trip. The grounds are amazingly well kept. The ponds water features and waterfalls are very relaxing. The trails to walk around this property are very nicely done. There are unique buildings on the property for yoga and meditation plan on spending at least an hour once you’re done with your exploring the gift shop and restaurant are a bonus. The food at the restaurant was unique and very tasty the deck attached to the restaurant, overlook the gardens and is a very relaxing place to have a bite to eat.

Beautiful Japanese inspired gardens. Long lush walkways with water, waterfalls, water fowl, and more. Lots of points to step off the path for pictures and benches all along as well to sit and enjoy. A flat option for strollers and those with walking issues are available, otherwise some rocks and light terrain to navigate. Volunteers walking around to assist, multiple restrooms all along. Says 45 to 60 minutes. Highly recommend, and be sure to buy some fish food for the koi ponds.
